"Good at" and "Good in"

Posted by Unknown  |

Look at the two sentences
1>I am good at sports.
2>I am good in sports.

Which one is correct?

Well there is no  specific rule to explain it but in general  sentence "1" is used by native speakers.
So you can say "1" is correct.

Now look at a the different cases as explained by BBC service.

  • 'He was the best in the class in French, but in mathematics and chemistry he was not so good.'(Correct)
  • 'He was the best in the class at French, but at mathematics and chemistry he was not so good.'(Incorrect)

The reason is with other expressions or verbs denoting assessment or ranking, the preposition in would be required.
(The word "best" is showing his ranking in French and his performance is being assessed in Mathematics and Chemistry.)

Another Example:

  • 'In pharmacology she obtained/scored/gained/attained the highest marks.'(Correct)
  • "At pharmacology she obtained/scored/gained/attained the highest marks.'(Incorrect)
(Highest denotes her ranking.)
