  • Passive structures
The match was rained off.√
Rained off was the match.(wrong)X


  • In relative clauses and questions that include verbs with linked adverbs or prepositions.
What did you put that there for?√
 For what [reason] did you put that there?(Sounds awkward) X


  • Infinitive structures 
Tom had no-one to play with. √
Tom had no-one with whom he can play.(Does not sound good).X

  • Questions beginning with who, where, what, etc.
Who were you talking to? √
To whom were you talking? (Previous one sounds better) X
